Coming to Blu-ray and DVD: The Rolling Stones - From the Vault - Live at the Tokyo Dome

By , Contributor
The From the Vault series of classic Rolling Stones concerts rolls on with the first official release of the 1990 Steel Wheels tour's stop in Japan. October 30, 2015 will see the release of From the Vault - Live at the Tokyo Dome on Blu-ray and DVD. Each will be accompanied by a two-disc CD of the concert, taped during their first-ever live performances in Japan (February 14-27, 1990). Most of the From the Vault releases have added the "live album" feature and quite frankly there's no other word for it other than, well, awesome. After all, the Live at the Tokyo Dome show runs about two hours and 15 minutes. While it's an important document of the Stones' very lucrative return to the road after seven years away, watching the show is a big time commitment. The CDs offer the convenience of returning to the show anytime, anywhere.

Not only with this show taken from the Stones' first visit to Japan, it was the final tour with bassist Bill Wyman. Every tour since Wyman's decision to leave the band has featured Darryl Jones on bass, an experienced and highly skilled player to be sure—but not a founding member of the band, obviously. So the Steel Wheels tour remains noteworthy as Wyman's last run. As for the show contained here, after previewing the concert in an advance stream, it holds up far better than I recall the shows from this tour being. It's a greatest hits-laden set list, featuring most of the usual perennials ("Brown Sugar," "Start Me Up," "Satisfaction") but also a few neat surprises like "2,000 Light Years from Home."

The Steel Wheels tunes hold up surprisingly well, too. "Sad Sad Sad," placed early in the set, kicks like the best vintage Stones rockers. The hit singles "Mixed Emotions" and "Rock and a Hard Place" fit right in, with the four-piece Uptown Horns bolstering the latter very nicely. The remastered audio was newly remixed by Bob Clearmountain (the advance preview didn't allow for evaluation of surround mix, looking forward to hear it). The video, keep in mind, is standard definition and therefore has significant resolution limitations when compared with today's videography. The real draw for snagging From the Vault - Live at the Tokyo Dome on Blu-ray is lossless audio.
