Out Now: The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts - DVD Collections: Stingers and Zingers and Hall of Famers

By , Contributor
Available as of April 14 via StarVista Entertainment/Time Life are two DVD collections of vintage Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts. One is an expansive, eight-disc collection containing 24 complete roasts, The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts: Stingers and Zingers. The set is loaded with bonus features including comedy sketches, exclusive interviews, and two featurettes: "Primetime Ribbing: Roasting Small-Screen Stars" and "Sports Stars: Hit 'Em Where It Hurts.” The set contains a generous 20-plus hours of classic comedy featuring everyone from Redd Fox to Michael Landon.

Dean Martin Stingers and Zingers cover (282x380).jpgThe eight-disc Stingers and Zingers carries a SRP of $59.95 (keep an eye out for deals). Check out the complete lineup of roastees as seen in 24 roasts: Valerie Harper, Jack Klugman & Tony Randall, Michael Landon, Carroll O'Connor, Sen. Hubert Humphrey, Wilt Chamberlain, Danny Thomas, Ted Knight, Dan Haggerty, Mr. T, Jack Klugman, Ed McMahon, Redd Foxx, Joe Garagiola, Evel Knievel, Hank Aaron, Peter Marshall, Truman Capote, William Conrad, Monty Hall, Leo Durocher, Bobby Riggs, and Joe Namath (twice).

Among the all-star panel of roasters, we hear zingers from the likes of: Bob Hope, Ed Asner, Lucille Ball, Georgia Engel, Milton Berle, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Ruth Buzzi, Sid Caesar, Foster Brooks, Charo, Howard Cosell, Angie Dickinson, Phyllis Diller, Nipsey Russell, Rich Little, Red Buttons, Audrey Meadows, Bob Newhart, Harvey Korman, Orson Welles, and many others.

Dean Martin Hall of Famers cover (269x380).jpgA more compact running time, and budget-friendly SRP, is found on the single-disc The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts: Hall of Famers DVD. The theme here, as you may have guessed by the title, is baseball greats. Hall of Famers contains two complete roasts. The targets: the legendary Hank Aaron, the pre-steroids era all-time home run king (which means, at least for many baseball fans, that he remains the king) and former MLB catcher Joe Garagiola (who was honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame for his broadcasting achievements). Included in the roaster’s panel are Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, and Stan Musial.

Also included on Hall of Famers are nearly an hour’s worth of bonus features. There are bonus comedy sketches as well as exclusive interviews with Shirley Jones, Norm Crosby, and Dan Haggerty. The nearly three-hour DVD is definitely priced all every budget, with a SRP of $12.95.
