The Movie Spew: Back to the Future Creator Finally Explains Creepy Mad Scientist/Teenage Boy Relationship

Bob Gale Finally Reveals What’s Up With Doc And Marty

If you’re a fan of Back to the Future then you’ve probably always wondered just what’s going on with Doc and Marty.

After all, why would a teenage boy hang out with an aging mad scientist who everyone in town considers dangerous? It’s an undeniably odd relationship that’s sparked theories raging from Doc knowing Marty’s future importance through time travel to good ol’ disgusting man/boy love.

The debate rages on endlessly amongst movie geeks and yesterday the question was posed again on the blog Mental Floss, with a stream of theories pouring in shortly thereafter. It’s happened before, but what made this time different was that Back to the Future writer/producer Bob Gale actually joined in to finally explain the bizarre relationship once and for all. His believable, if boring explanation is as follows:

“For years, Marty was told that Doc Brown was dangerous, a crackpot, a lunatic. So, being a red-blooded American teenage boy, age 13 or 14, he decided to find out just why this guy was so dangerous. Marty snuck into Doc’s lab, and was fascinated by all the cool stuff that was there. When Doc found him there, he was delighted to find that Marty thought he was cool and accepted him for what he was. Both of them were the black sheep in their respective environments. Doc gave Marty a part-time job to help with experiments, tend to the lab, tend to the dog, etc. And that’s the origin of their relationship.”

I’ll buy that, even if it is as much of a letdown as the Sesame Street folks once again claiming that Bert And Ernie aren’t gay a week ago. Still, Gale’s explanation doesn’t make this clip any less funny:

Matthew McConaughey To Finally Play A Strip Club Owner

Steven Soderbergh may still be planning on retiring from movies, but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t currently hard at work ensuring that his indie male stripper drama Magic Mike will be as good as possible. Today, the endlessly unpredictable director has added another piece to his G-string puzzle. Matthew McConaughey has signed on to play a former stripper who owns the club in which star Channing Tatum (whose former stripping days served as inspiration for the script) will strut his stuff.

It’s another interesting choice for McConaughey who seems to have finally decided to get back to acting after years spent taking his shirt off in shitty rom-coms with Kate Hudson. McConaughey will undoubtedly take his shirt off in the male stripper movie, but he’s also going to play a compelling character as he recently did in the underrated The Lincoln Lawyer and the rather amazing HBO comedy Eastbound And Down.

The actor showed nothing but promise back in his early A Time to Kill days and perhaps now he’s finally going to deliver on that promise rather than merely pursuing a career as an innocuous movie star.

A Masturbation Period Piece Starring Maggie Gyllenhaal Has Finally Been Made

What better way could there be to conclude a weird movie news day than with a trailer for a movie about Victorian doctors inventing groundbreaking female sexual aids? Yep, that’s a real movie. It’s called Hysteria, it has a cast featuring Jonathan Pryce and Maggie Gyllenhaal, and you can watch the trailer below if you don’t believe me.
