Do you think starring on an episode of Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives this year had anything to do with Smash Mouth’s Steve Harwell eating 24 eggs for charity?
We didn’t think so. A bid to restart his
career? Nope. Not that either.
What really happened according to a report on Gawker.com was that a Smash Mouth fan/Twitter user named Fart [real name Jon Hendren, who writes for humor website Something Awful] became rather put out that the San Jose, California-based band rarely used their verified Twitter account, so Hendren began tweeting inexplicably about the singer and eggs about a month ago.
Nobody
paid it much notice at first, and then a groundswell began and scores of users
began tweeting “Smash Mouth Eat the Eggs,” going so far as to make YouTube
videos about the challenge. Things heated up after someone got a hold of Harwell’s cell phone
number and began leaving him hundreds of messages about the still-imaginary challenge. Then the Facebook page of Montalvo
Art Center in Saratoga California urged Smash Mouth to eat the eggs at one of their
upcoming show.
Adding to the pressure is an account on the Causes website: "Smash Mouth, Eat the Eggs," which already has $7,234.56 pledged towards St. Jude's Children's Hospital. If it reaches $10,000, Smash Mouth lead singer Steve Harwell has consented to eat 24 eggs. If it doesn’t, well, Fart will just have egg on his face.
