ABC's Expedition Impossible Goes Interactive For a Day

The new reality show brings a taste of Morocco to Manhattan.

In the forthcoming ABC reality show, Expedition Impossible, thirteen groups of three get the chance to prove their mettle as they traverse "vast deserts, snow-capped mountains, and ford raging rivers in the beautifully exotic, fabled Kingdom of Morocco." Competitors are not athletes, but ordinary people: farmers, firemen, office workers, etc., competing for the chance to win three Ford Explorers and $150,000 for the team.

To promote the show, Ford, Expedition's sponsor, has put forth a unique challenge. On Thursday, June 23, New York's Times Square Military Island will be transformed into a makeshift desert, complete with sand dunes, and offer passersby various physical activities promoting team competition. If you're up for it, you can experience a scaled down version of the challenges given to Expedition's competitors in this Expedition Impossible interactive event.

According to the press release, "The Times Square event will reflect the same physical and mental nature of Expedition Impossible through highly visible and interactive means." There will be lots of digging in the sand, competing as a team and... wait for it... interacting with the new 2011 Ford Explorer.

Your event passport, which will be stamped upon completion of each challenge, is good for your very own customized Expedition Impossible water bottle (while supplies last, of course) at the end of your visit.

If you're the more adventurous type, you can attempt a "personal challenge," in which you put on a harness and make the expedition up one of three 30-foot palm trees at Coconut Tree Climb. There is also the "Moroccan Mind Challenge" in which teams will be asked to use snap judgment and quick thinking to construct a customized Expedition Impossible puzzle. If the Moroccan desert sounds like an intriguing hot spot, you'll want to check out the Expedition Images photo tent. This is where you'll find a variety of images courtesy of a green screen, and put yourself in the scene. As a keepsake of your experience, you'll be able to download your photos at ABC's Expedition Impossible website and share your adventures with family and friends.

If this sounds like fun and you don't mind waiting on what is sure to be a queue to rival Broadway's TKTS booth, slip on those sandals, gather the kids, and make mid-town Manhattan your Thursday destination.

The Expedition Impossible event will run from 6 AM to 6 PM on Thursday, June 23 at the Times Square Military Island in mid-town Manhattan.

Expedition Impossible premieres Thursday night at 9 ET on ABC.
