Glamming It Up: An Interview with The Glam Fairy, Alexa Prisco

When it comes to drive and determination, Alexa Prisco's got it going on. This ultra-successful dynamo is otherwise known to America as The Glam Fairy, and currently ruling not only the world of makeup, but the airwaves too as she takes her beauty concept to a new level with a new TV series to boot. Recently, I caught up with Alexa, who shared her secrets to beauty world domination and the secret to her sparkling success.

Where did you get your start?

My mom is an artist and my dad’s a musician, so I remember painting and doing artistic types of things from when I was a kid. I was doing makeovers on my dolls when I was ten! At 17, I got a job at a bath and body-oriented chain store. After one month, I was promoted to Team Leader, dealing with thousands of customers and it just came easy to me. A month later, I was appointed brand ambassador of the chain nationally, promoting to thousands.

The climb was natural, and I’ve always just loved makeup and the people behind the MAC counter at the mall were just Gods to me. I was obsessed with what they wore, what they did — they always looked great. So, later on in my college years, I got a job at a MAC counter but even that started expanding. Sooner or later, frequent clients of the counter were asking me to do their makeup at home on the side. It was crazy.

That drive to succeed began quite early for you, didn’t it! How was The Glam Fairy born then?

Towards the end of college, I got an internship at Maxim magazine. At the time, they only took interns from NYU but somehow I worked my way in there. Things just kept getting better there and soon, they asked me to work on freelance articles. After college, I just wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. On a whim, I went to bartending school for five days, my father was furious! He sat me down and said, “Okay, what is it that you do that makes you forget what time it is?” Easy — makeup.

My mother then said I should use my diminutive height to my advantage and figure out the next steps. Glam was always a part of my life so the Glam Fairy name was created, my mother made me a handpainted sign, I ran off some fliers I designed, and off I went to display at a bridal show. From that first show, I booked tons of clients and from there it just got bigger and bigger. The earning potential was unlimited.

What separates the Glam Fairy from the rest of the pack?

From the beginning, it’s always been a science for me. A while back I devised a bridal formula by seeing what works, and what doesn’t work.

What do you love most about your job?

I just love making people feel beautiful, transforming their self-esteem from the inside and out, and bringing people back to their original selves. After we’re done with a client, the makeup comes off at the end of the day but that feeling of beauty and self-confidence stays on with them. That to me is the best part.

What’s the biggest misconception about you?

Well, Jerseylicious really did a good job of establishing me as a heartless, mean, somewhat impatient person. I’m really quite the opposite rather, a hard worker who genuinely cares about everything I do and everyone I work with.

How’s your relationship with the crew at The Gatsby salon now?

Honestly, right now there’s just no relationship. We run in two different directions. My time at The Gatsby was me testing the South Jersey demographic and it just did not work, it wasn’t a great fit.

What’s the most challenging part of the filming process?

It’s just a nonstop cycle. I’ll literally go from one location for hours of filming, over to Glam Fairy for more hours, wake up the next day and handle a 12-person bridal party, then the next day a photo shoot, and so on. I’ve been going nonstop like this for nine years now and I don’t even know how to slow down. I love it.

What’s up next for the Glam Fairy?

What’s next? Quite a lot actually! We’re opening up a Glam Fairy Academy complete with a Glam Fairy certification program, so we’ll be creating Fairies all over the country. I’ve got a book in the works which showcases what we’re all about. My dream is really to take over the space just next to our head office, a 7,000 square foot loft and divide it up into all different rooms complete with areas for photo shoots, a boutique, rooms for classes, the soup to nuts of glam. But I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t in the works already…

If you had to describe Jersey in three words, what would they be?

Not just cheetah.
