It’s enough to make an Agent 007 fan drool. Bond 50 is MGM Studios’ and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s grand way of celebrating 50 years of the ever-popular spy series. Twenty-three Blu-ray discs, one for each of 22 films plus one disc dedicated to bonus material, are housed in a rather eye-pleasing box, graced by photos of all six Bond actors. The set, which marks the first time all the Bond films will be available together in high definition, is set for release September 25, just weeks ahead of the 23rd film in the series, Skyfall.
A pair of all-new featurettes will be found on the bonus
material disc, “The World of Bond” and “Being Bond.” The former promises a look
at “five decades of classic James Bond,” and will include an optional Pop-Up
Trivia track. The latter profiles the six actors—Sean Connery, George Lazenby,
Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig—who have tackled
the iconic character over the last half-decade. Also included on the bonus disc
are the “Skyfall Videoblogs,” which
will psych up fans with an early look at the making of the new film.
Of course, tons of bonus features will carry over from
previous releases, with every disc containing extras. According to the press
release, all told there will be some 122 hours of bonus material. Quite a few
films in the series—You Only Live Twice,
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Diamonds Are Forever, The Spy Who Loved Me, Octopussy, A View to a Kill, The Living
Daylights, GoldenEye, and Tomorrow Never Dies—will make their
Blu-ray debut as part of Bond 50.
Incidentally, Never
Say Never Again (1983) is not included in the set, as it isn’t considered
an “official” Bond film since it was not produced by Eon Productions (the
company that produced all 22 films in Bond
50). Amazon is offering an exclusive variation to the standard set that
includes the hardcover book, James Bond: 50 Years of Movie Posters. Bond 50 is currently available for
pre-order from participating online retailers, a good option for fans who want
to secure a lower price in advance of the of September 25, 2012 release date.
