Billy Corgan's Record Club - Smashing Pumpkins Tour

Head Pumpkin Shows How To Prosper in an ITunes World

By , Contributor
Don’t count Billy Corgan out. Sure, he’s a little socially erratic, and an over-sharer on Twitter, but he’s still a canny genius. Case in point: The Smashing Pumpkins Record Club. We’re not sure what kind of revenue model it will be in an iTunes world, but he’s kicked off the venture by giving away a free 8-track demo version of “Drown,” one of the professional Pisces’ watery masterpieces.

Go over to the Pumpkins website and enter an email address, you’ll get the track of the free download, which is more hushed, anxious and more quietly transcendent than the one you remember. Think Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir,” with the clamor of the early Stooges. If that’s not incentive enough to check it out,  there’s also a video of the Head Pumpkin (we did not say Pumpkin Head) speaking about the recording of the demo, of what he calls “our first release,” adding that the nine-minute version of “Drown” is something “we’re using as a promotional tool to get you to give up your very valuable and precious email.”

Also, we want to make you aware that he’s promising gift with purchase. Freebies abound. You can buttonhole Corgan and ask him about it when you see him on tour. The reemergence of the Smashing Pumpkins begins on October 5, at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theater.
