Four New Hendrix Issues Keep Jimi Front and Center

Hendrix in sight and sound.

The legend of Jimi Hendrix is found in every new release that is available. And more is to be enjoyed with the upcoming releases of four new Hendrix offerings from Experience Hendrix (a Hendrix estate entity safeguarding the Hendrix vaults), in conjunction with Legacy Recordings.

On September 13, there will be four new sets delivered that looks closely at Jimi Hendrix as an onstage performer. Of course, his ability to electrify is well documented, especially with his memorable appearances at Woodstock and Monterey. But there was much more of Hendrix that fans never got to experience and now will get a great chance to.

The first of the sets, likely the most anticipated, is the four-disc deluxe box set, Winterland. Winterland has its own legend. Put the two together, and the magic multiplies. Winterland will provide never before released performances from six separate shows played at the historic venue over a three day period (October 10, 11, 12 of 1968), largely in support of Electric Ladyland. The songs from these different shows may be replicated in title but not in energy, making each performance unique.

Winterland will also be issued on eight LPs (180g) as well as a single CD set called Highlights. If you opt for the 4-CD Deluxe Edition (and why wouldn't you?), you will be getting not only a well-assembled 36-page booklet filled with unpublished photos from photographers' sets, but also a David Fricke essay. Another Deluxe Edition perk includes a Jimi Hendrix interview from backstage at The Boston Garden, a few weeks after the Winterland shows.

Hendrix In The West is a set that features Jimi Hendrix live from 1969 and 1970 playing venues from Berkeley Community Theatre to San Diego Sports Arena to Isle of Wight. Originally released back in 1972, this set returns after being out of print for many years. The bonus of this set is the addition of previously unreleased performance tracks to beef up the new release along with a 24-page booklet. Hendrix In The West will be reissued as a single CD or a two-LP (180g) set.

Experience Hendrix/Legacy will also re-release Blue Wild Angel: Jimi Hendrix At The Isle Of Wight on DVD, originally released in the format back in 2002. The film was directed by Murray Lerner (Festival) in front of 600,000 appreciative fans at the popular Isle of Wight festival in 1970. This newly reissued video will add in newly discovered footage from the same blistering set, expanding the film. In addition, the DVD will provide a camera angle feature that will allow for selections that give you a favored view. The DVD will feature both 5.1 Surround Sound and Stereo sound.

Finally, the label will offer a complete set of Hendrix appearances on The Dick Cavett Show on DVD. The 90-minute DVD includes all of Hendrix's interviews from the show as well as song performances of "Izabella," "Machine Gun," and "Hear My Train A Comin'." This new Deluxe DVD of Jimi Hendrix: The Dick Cavett Show adds in a new "behind the scenes" documentary not found in the 2002 release.

It's Jimi Hendrix. How can you possibly go wrong?
