Even though Noel Gallagher
said back in 1995 that an artist only ever gets five years at the top, he’s
vying for another go at it. In a press conference in London yesterday morning he
revealed that he’s not only got one but two solo albums ready for release through
his own Sour Mash Records imprint.
The first, titled Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will see the light of day on October 17 in the UK, and on November 8 on our shores. Recorded in both Los Angeles and London, it marks Gallagher’s first venture as a solo artist, with his yet-to-be-titled second disc, recorded with the Amorphorous Androgynous, to be released next year.
Gallagher has been threatening to release a record under his own name for more than a decade, but it became a reality when Oasis broke up on a steamy August night in Paris two years ago, after an altercation over an ad his brother Liam wanted to put in their tour program for his clothing line, Pretty Green. While fisticuffs between the two siblings were nothing new—they had canceled tours because of them in the past—this turned out to be the proverbial last straw when Liam attacked his older brother with a guitar. Noel quit the band, issuing a simple statement: “People will write and say what they like but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”
For the past two years he has kept silent about the matter, even barring his brother from his recent wedding, but in his press conference he finally broke his moratorium on the breakup, claiming that his brother stormed into the band's Paris dressing room wielding a guitar like an "axe" in an argument over Liam's attempts to advertise his Pretty Green label in the Oasis tour program.
"He nearly took my face
off with (the guitar)... I didn't think it was right for him to be flogging his
gear [clothes] to our fans. There was a massive row about that."
The incident escalated to a brawl between the two, with Liam tossing a plum at Noel. Yes, a plum! It was then that Gallagher decided to finally walk away from the band he founded. "Part of me wishes it did end like that: 'plum throws plum'," he said.
After all his admissions, Noel didn’t even get the last word. Shortly after the conclusion of his press conference, Liam took to his little-used Twitter account and wrote “SH**Bag.”
