Patti Smith: Rock and Roll Never Forgets

And in case it does, Patti Smith writes a primer.

In case you just can’t get enough of Patti Smith after reading her New York Times best seller Just Kids, we have good news for you. Sony Legacy is putting out Patti Smith: Outside Society on August 23. More or less a primer on Smith’s musical career, this remastered collection contains 18 of the haunted, brainy chanteuse’s iconic songs—spanning from 1975’s “Gloria” and “Free Money” through 2007’s cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Even better, there is a CD booklet included where Smith annotates and explains her recollections of each song. Here’s a brief glimpse of what she says of “Because The Night”:

"Bruce Springsteen gave me a great gift in allowing me to lend verses to his beautifully constructed anthem. My contribution was written for my future husband, Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith. Though we have performed it hundreds of times, the strong response it draws always makes it fresh and exciting to sing."

Even even better news is Patti Smith has booked some US dates. Upcoming shows for Patti Smith and her Band (including Lenny Kaye, Jay Dee Daugherty, Tony Shanahan, and Jack Petruzzelli) include the Castle Clinton National Monument in Manhattan's Battery Park on Thursday, July 14; and the Shinnecock Reservation in Southampton, NY on Friday, August 5, the opening day of the Escape To New York weekend festival.
